Sandwiches are “a dinner’s worth of fat and calories”, according to Australian Nutrition Foundation chief nutritionist Jane Smith.

The Australian Nutrition Foundation carried out a study examining amounts of total fat, saturated fat and sodium present in various sandwiches.

The study suggested that the healthiest sandwiches were turkey with mustard and roast beef with mustard.

Turkey with mustard sandwiches have the lowest amount of total and saturated fat.

Roast beef with mustard, although they have the second lowest amount of total and saturated fat, have the lowest amount of sodium.

The study found tuna salad sandwiches to have the highest amount of total fat.

“That's the equivalent of three McDonald’s Quarter Pounders, fat-wise,” said Ms Smith.

The study analysed 170 sandwiches from 30 Melbourne take away food outlets.
